As Hurricane Dennis moved northward, first across Haiti, then across Cuba, those of us spending the summer in Southwest Florida began to have concerns as to whether we would experience the torrents of yet another Gulf Coast hurricane... but, fortunately, Dennis proved to have little more than a few menacing effects in our area. Starting Friday evening, July 8th, we experienced some of the outer bands of the storm, with brief rain squalls and some gusty winds. Saturday morning seemed calm, as many residents traveled to nearby stores picking up supplies, and others visited with neighbors in the streets. Saturday afternoon, the gusty winds and rain squalls resumed, and continued through the night. While we experienced occasional wind gusts of nearly 60 miles an hour, Dennis actually dropped very little rain on our community... and what rain did fall, was quickly dried up by the gusty winds. Dennis left little, if any, damaging effects within our community. We noted only a few broken tree branches, and standing water in a few places, which is not at all unusual during any of our frequent summer downpours in Spanish Wells. Sunday morning, a few golfers actually managed to get in a round or two of golf, despite an occasional shower, and continued breezy conditions. By Sunday afternoon, concerns for our community had pretty much faded, but most residents stayed glued to their TV screens, as Dennis again reached Category 4 strength and threatened both lives and property in the Florida Panhandle. Our prayers go out to all who face the fury of Dennis in locations far to the north of us.
